20 Gauge Galvanized Steel Sheet – Corrosion-Resistant Sheet Metal
This 20-gauge galvanized steel sheet has a nominal thickness of about 0.0396 in (1.0 mm) and a smooth zinc-coated finish. It is a versatile, lighter-gauge sheet that is easy to cut, bend and form, ideal for ducting, flashing, enclosures, panels and general sheet metal work.
Galvanized sheet is supplied flat and can be sheared, punched, drilled, rolled, bent, spot-welded and riveted. The zinc coating protects the steel from corrosion and also provides a good base for paint after proper surface preparation.

Working with Galvanized Sheet
Use sharp shears or a metal-cutting blade and deburr cut edges. Form bends gradually to avoid cracking the coating. Galvanized steel is carbon steel protected by a zinc coating. The zinc acts as a barrier against moisture and oxygen and also protects the steel sacrificially at small scratches and cut edges, which is why galvanized material is a long-lasting choice for outdoor, damp and industrial settings. Galvanized steel can be cut, drilled, welded and fastened with standard metalworking tools. Zinc fumes are released when galvanized steel is welded, so work in a well-ventilated area, use appropriate respiratory protection and grind away the coating near the weld zone where possible. After cutting, welding or drilling, touch up exposed steel with a zinc-rich cold galvanizing compound to restore corrosion protection.
Storage and Handling
Handle and store the material off the ground, on dunnage, in a dry and ventilated area. Avoid stacking wet material tightly, as trapped moisture can cause white storage stain (harmless zinc oxide). Dimensions, weights and finish appearance (spangle) may vary slightly between production lots. Please verify critical dimensions and load requirements with your engineer before purchase; this product description is for general guidance and is not a substitute for engineering design. Sheet edges are sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is gauge the same as inches or millimetres?
No. Gauge is a thickness standard; the nominal thickness for this gauge is shown above. Higher gauge numbers are thinner.
Can I paint it?
Yes. Clean and degrease the surface, then use a primer designed for galvanized metal.
